From a mechanical perspective, left and right counterweights play a vital role in balance, and the core lies in the principle of force and moment balance.
In a static or uniformly rotating system, zero resultant force is one of the basic conditions for balance. When an object has a left-right asymmetrical structure or load, an unbalanced force will be generated. For example, in a crane, when there is a heavy object on one side of the boom, a large downward force will be generated on this side. If there is no suitable counterweight, this force will shift the overall center of gravity of the crane, causing the crane to tilt toward the heavy object, and even risk tipping. By setting a counterweight on the other side, a force that counteracts the gravity of the heavy object can be generated, so that the resultant force of the entire crane in the vertical direction approaches zero, ensuring the stability of the crane when it is static.
The balance of moment is even more critical. The moment is the product of the force and the lever arm, and plays a decisive role in considering the rotational balance of an object. Taking the seesaw as an example, the distances of the people on the left and right sides from the fulcrum are different (the lever arms are different), and the weight (force) is also different. Without proper counterweight adjustment, the seesaw will tilt to one side. In mechanical systems, such as automobiles, uneven distribution of engines, passengers, and cargo will lead to unbalanced torques on the left and right sides about the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. This imbalance will cause the vehicle to have a tendency to roll while driving, affecting the handling stability. By properly configuring the left and right counterweights, the sum of the torques on the left and right sides of the vehicle about the longitudinal axis is equal, and the vehicle will not easily roll during driving, ensuring safe and stable driving.
